Projects in Pictures: Sharing imaginative, interesting, and functional approaches in lighting outdoor
spaces
What inspires you? In this
issue of Projects in Pictures, we're showcasing the imaginative, interesting, and functional approaches
architects and designers are taking in lighting outdoor spaces with wall-mounted lighting elements. As
this series unfolds, we'll be featuring lighting designs for projects large and small, near and far, and
for a variety of uses.
The Warner Building and Haymarket Plaza features Landscape Forms'
Torres wall-mounted lights and Carousel café-height tables and seats.
Warner Building and Haymarket Plaza, Kalamazoo, MI
Once a delivery alley, the Warner Building and Haymarket Plaza is now an expanded, active space shared with
people working and living in downtown Kalamazoo but still accessible to delivery trucks and emergency
vehicles. Tower Pinkster's landscape architecture team selected Torres wall-mounted lighting to keep the
small plaza open, free of poles, and poised to host evening events and visitors. Dual-fixture Torres area
lights along the building's entrance illuminate both the sidewalk and street.
Site elements that draw people to Smart VMC’s public spaces were
carefully considered by CC+A in collaboration with Marcel Dion and feature Landscape Forms’ Ashbery
area, path, and wall-mounted lights, MultipliCITY path lights, and benches.
Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Smart VMC, Vaughan,
Ontario
The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is a 400-acre parcel of land where a multi-year,
multi-phase development is literally building a city. One of the first areas to be developed, Smart VMC
comprises 100 acres of residential and office buildings, a transportation hub, and public spaces. A
thoughtful transition of promenades, parks, and plazas and playful patterns and shapes − all trademarks of
landscape architecture firm Claude Cormier + Associates − add a dynamic spirit to the place. Ashbery
wall-mounted lights line the exterior of the transportation center to light the sidewalk along a busy
roadway. CC+A, in partnership with lighting designer Marcel Dion, selected Ashbery lights for their timeless
design.
A tunnel constructed under Fishers' main thoroughfare gives pedestrians
safe passage between the downtown core and the trail park. Arne pole and wall-attached lights guide
visitors to the tunnel and keep the active linear park hopping into the evening hours.
Nickel Plate Trail, Fishers, Indiana
From rail line to linear trail, the Nickel Plate Trail runs 3.8 miles through the city of Fishers, but
eventually it will be part of a 40-mile regional trail extending from Noblesville to Indianapolis. Through
the downtown core, the trail expands into a linear park that offers trail visitors places to sit and
people-watch, enjoy a coffee or lunch, or swing on the popular custom swings installed under the old depot
station. Indianapolis-based firm Browning Day's design features a variety of seating options that suit
multiple activities, ages, and abilities and add a pop of color to the park. Arne wall-attached lights guide
people to the tunnel that connects the trail to downcore Fishers.
