About Scott Klinker
Furniture designer, artist, and educator Scott Klinker heads the graduate 3D design program at the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art as Designer-in-Residence, where he also received his MFA in 1996. His work there builds on the Cranbrook tradition of modern design - searching for new forms to address our changing needs. In line with Cranbrook's tradition of integrating Design, Art and Craft, he believes that the best forms are not conceived in the mind, but discovered with the hands. His broad approach to form giving is driven by an interest in remixing the categories of industrial design, architecture and sculpture.
A material translation of a traditional umbrella, Stretch evokes the appearance of taut fabric stretched over fanned ribs. In contrast to its formal inspiration, Stretch’s cast aluminum shade and minimalist construction offer a more durable, confidence-inspiring silhouette while allowing the interior to be unobstructed by visible hardware. Designed by Scott Klinker through a distinctly architectural lens, Stretch is both a site furnishing and an iconic piece of architecture, allowing landscape architects to accentuate their unique design language with a more artful expression of the sun shade.
