One of
the most prestigious design recognitions, the Red Dot Award: Product Design is
an international competition honoring excellence across 51 categories ranging
from fashion and accessories to consumer electronics, vehicles and furniture.
To accurately and professionally appraise such a wide range of submissions, Red
Dot brings together a diverse, independent jury panel, which in 2023, consisted
of 43 design experts hailing from 20 different nations.
"What’s
so special about Red Dot is that, in many ways, they set the standard for all
other design awards,” says Ryan Heiser, Director of Design at Landscape Forms.
“And looking at the types of products that win Red Dot awards, you notice a
very clear harmony between form and function—the solutions have to be
beautiful, but they also have to work. This is a philosophy we adhere to very
closely in our design process and is one of the many reasons that make these
particular recognitions so meaningful.”
Embodying
this combination of beautiful, sculptural form and innovative function, the
highly awarded Profile family of lights celebrates yet another as a winner in
the Red Dot Lighting Systems category. Consisting of an area light, accent
light, column light, and trio of bollards, Profile stands out both as a modular
lighting solution and as an artful way to present intentional illumination.
Designed with Linnaea Tillett and Tillett Lighting Design Associates, the
collaborative endeavor brings together expertise in all aspects ranging from
lighting technology, to engineering, to manufacturing and high-quality
craftsmanship. Of the design process Linnaea Tillett, Ph.D., Founder &
Principal of Tillett Lighting Design Associates, describes, "We start with
quality of light—how we make the experience of light feel right, how we can
make light do what we want it do in an ecologically responsible way—and then we
build form around that,” she says. “And it was through dialog with Landscape
Forms that we were able to combine this right quality of light with a form that
sits quite happily in a wide variety of contexts. Profile represents a process
and an ethos that’s very important to us, so it’s a special moment to have that
recognized, especially by colleagues in the design industry.”
Another
highly awarded product family, the Typology Collection was honored with two
2023 Red Dot awards, one for its centerpiece ribbon bench in the Urban Design
category and one for its luminaires in the Lighting Systems category. Created
with Designworks, a BMW Group company, Typology is a systematic collection of
streetscape elements that intelligently addresses real world needs in urban
design while also introducing aspects of public art. Its ribbon bench is a
modular system of seating segments, configurable backs, arms and surfaces, and
integral lighting that introduces new ways of defining and activating public
outdoor space. Typology lighting—consisting of the ring light, the stick light,
and the path light—focuses on breaking away from traditional lighting design
vernacular to bring a wholly unique and immersive experience to the category.
Enveloping the observer, Typology lighting elements play with space and shadow,
joining the sky and ground with a signature, unmistakable design language.
"When designing the Typology Collection, our intention was to play in both
the vertical and horizontal spaces of urban environments. Complementary
elements connect the realms of the sky and the ground to create a magnetic and
immersive user experience,” says Tobias Adami, Creative Director and the Munich
Studio of Designworks.
Celebrated
for its elegant evolution of the fixed-seat dining table, Take-Out was also
recognized with a Red Dot award in the Urban Design category. The group of five
complementary seats and surfaces expands on the connected seating concept with
simplified lines and improved versatility. Light enough to be picked up,
arranged and rearranged, Take-Out opens up new ways for people to experience
and connect in outdoor spaces. Designed by Rodrigo Torres, Take-Out joins the
eponymous Torres lighting line as the designer's second Red-Dot-Award-winning
collaboration with Landscape Forms. "With products and projects from all
over the world, it’s incredible how many people are competing in Red Dot every
year, and it’s an absolute honor to share this award with Landscape Forms,”
says Torres. “They’re a fantastic partner who knows the importance of ethics,
gets the power of creating a wonderful place to work, and deeply understands
the strategic role of design.”
